FH® Trackers Shine a Light on Healthcare Trends
April 24, 2025
FAIR Health uses its vast commercial healthcare claims data repository—the largest of its kind in the nation—to further its mission to bring transparency to healthcare cost and utilization information for all healthcare stakeholders. One such use is FH® Trackers, a series of free, interactive, visual tools that shine a light on healthcare procedures and costs as they vary with geography. Showing healthcare statistics by state or region and the nation, FH Trackers currently include a view of trends related to telehealth, opioid abuse and dependence, and giving birth. Custom trackers are also available to meet clients’ specifications.
Opioid Abuse and Dependence
The Opioid Tracker is a heat map of the percentage of patients with opioid abuse and dependence diagnoses compared to all patients receiving medical services in each state.
Clicking on the map displays infographics for each state or the nation as a whole. Each infographic includes the top five most used procedure codes and the top five procedure codes by aggregate allowed amounts for opioid abuse and dependence. Also included are the change in the percentage of patients with opioid abuse and dependence diagnoses compared to all patients receiving medical services, and the distribution of those patients by age and gender.
The Opioid Tracker was last updated in September 2024 and reflects data from 2020 through 2023. FAIR Health updates the Opioid Tracker each year in September.
The Opioid Tracker has been mentioned in such media outlets as Axios, HIT Consultant and the American Journal of Managed Care.
Giving Birth
The Cost of Giving Birth Tracker includes interactive heat maps that show state-specific and national median charge and allowed amounts for vaginal deliveries and C-sections; users can toggle between the types of delivery. Inpatient and outpatient facility and professional costs are included. Services include the delivery itself (e.g., pharmacy, nursery, labor and delivery room, medical and surgical supplies, room and board for the mother), anesthesia, fetal nonstress tests, ultrasounds, laboratory work and breast pump. FAIR Health refreshes the Cost of Giving Birth Tracker each year in June.
The Cost of Giving Birth Tracker has been mentioned in such media outlets as The Hill, Forbes and Axios.
Telehealth
The Monthly Telehealth Regional Tracker uses FAIR Health data to track how telehealth is evolving on a monthly basis in each of the four US census regions and for the nation as a whole. The content of the Telehealth Tracker infographics changes from year to year. For information on this year’s new version of the Telehealth Tracker, see the article in this issue.
The Telehealth Tracker Trending Reports launched in October 2024 and show trends over a six-month period. Initially, these reports displayed national and regional trends in telehealth utilization from January to June 2024; this month, reports from July to December 2024 were added.
The Monthly Telehealth Regional Tracker has been mentioned in numerous notable media outlets, such as McKnight’s Senior Living, Becker’s Hospital Review and Healthcare Finance.
