Telehealth Trends from April to June 2025

FAIR Health’s Monthly Telehealth Regional Tracker presents month-to-month variations in telehealth trends nationally and in the four US census regions. An earlier article revealed trends across the first three months of 2025. The trends from April to June 2025 are summarized below.

Telehealth Utilization
Nationally, the percentage of patients with a telehealth claim decreased by 0.8 percent in April, increased by 0.8 percent in May and then continued to increase by 0.2 percent in June. In May, the percentage of patients with a telehealth claim increased in every region. However, the Northeast and West were the only regions where the direction of change in telehealth utilization remained constant throughout the three-month period; in those regions, utilization increased every month from April to June.

Telehealth claim lines also varied by location and by month from April to June. Nationally, for example, utilization increased by 1.1 percent in April, then decreased by 1.0 percent in May, and increased again by 1.1 percent in June.

Top Five Diagnostic Categories
From April to June 2025, mental health conditions remained the top telehealth diagnostic category nationally and in every US census region. After increasing everywhere in April, the percentage of patients with a telehealth claim who had a diagnosis of mental health conditions decreased everywhere in May and then increased again everywhere in June. Nationally, the increase in April was from 61.6 to 63.0 percent; in May, that percentage decreased to 62.1 percent; and in June, it increased to 63.1 percent.

Top Five Procedure Categories
From April to June 2025, established patient office or other outpatient services, and psychotherapy services and procedures, were the top two telehealth procedure categories nationally and in every region. The order of the two varied. Nationally, in April and June, psychotherapy services and procedures was ranked first, but in May, established patient office or other outpatient services was first. In the Midwest and Northeast regions, psychotherapy services and procedures was ranked in first position all three months, and in the South and West, established patient office or other outpatient services was ranked first in all three months.

Age Distribution
In April, May and June 2025, the age groups 19-30 and 31-40 accounted for the largest percentages of patients with a telehealth claim nationally and in every region. At the national level, the percentages varied from 22.4 to 23.3 percent in the age group 19-30 and from 22.6 to 23.0 percent in the age group 31-40. In all three months, nationally and in every region, the age groups 0-9 and 65 and older accounted for the smallest shares of patients with a telehealth claim; their share was less than 10 percent in all areas from April to June. Moreover, the share of patients with a telehealth claim in the age group 0-9 was less than five percent in all three months everywhere except the West, where it was 6.1 percent each month.

Urban Versus Rural Use
From April to June 2025, telehealth utilization remained higher in urban areas than rural areas nationally and in all four regions. Nationally, the percentage of patients in urban areas using telehealth fell from 14.46 percent in March to 14.34 percent in April, while the percentage in rural areas rose from 7.20 percent to 7.43 percent. From April to June, the percentage increased in both urban and rural areas. In urban areas, the percentage rose from 14.34 percent in April to 14.46 in May and to 14.49 percent in June, and in rural areas, it increased from 7.43 percent in April to 7.49 percent in May and to 7.51 percent in June. Regionally, changes in the percentage of patients with a telehealth claim in both rural and urban areas varied by month. For example, in May, that percentage increased in urban areas in every region, but in April and June, it decreased in urban areas of the Midwest and South while it increased in urban areas of the Northeast and West.
