States by the Numbers: New FAIR Health Capability

September 20, 2018

FAIR Health has released an online interactive heat map at fairhealth.org/states-by-the-numbers/map showing new findings on opioid abuse and dependence diagnoses and procedures for all 50 states and the District of Columbia. We can develop similar States by the Numbers analytics and visualizations for other diseases and conditions.

States by the Numbers for Opioid Abuse and Dependence

States by the Numbers for opioid abuse and dependence has been created in conjunction with our just-released white paper on regional and state variations in opioid-related treatment. The innovative state-by-state visualizations allow Americans throughout the country to see a snapshot of the opioid crisis in their particular state or across state lines.

Drawing on our database of more than 26 billion privately billed medical and dental claim records dating back to 2002, the national heat map represents opioid abuse and dependence claim lines as a percentage of total medical claim lines by state in 2017. The colors of the states reveal which states have the highest or lowest percentages.

Clicking on a state displays an infographic for that state in 2017. The infographic includes the top five procedures associated with opioid abuse and dependence by utilization and aggregate cost, such as methadone administration, naltrexone injection and group psychotherapy. The lists of procedures vary considerably from state to state. Each infographic also shows the percentages of opioid abuse and dependence diagnoses by age group and gender in the state.

Customized States by the Numbers

Stakeholders across the healthcare sector can benefit from this geographic window into the data. FAIR Health can create customized States by the Numbers data analyses and visualizations to meet the specific needs of federal and state governments, policy makers, researchers, patient advocacy groups, regional associations, payors, providers, manufacturers and others. States by the Numbers can be used to study a variety of diseases and conditions, and healthcare system utilization, at the level of a geozip (a geographic region typically defined by the first three digits of a zip code), a combination of geozips, a state, a multistate region or the nation.

A small sampling of questions States by the Numbers can answer includes:

  • What states have the most private insurance claims for a condition?
  • How has utilization for the condition changed over time?
  • What age and gender groups are most likely to be diagnosed?
  • What are the most common and costly procedures for the condition?
  • What are the top ten diagnoses presenting in a telehealth setting?
  • Where are retail clinics most prevalent?
  • How do diagnoses or procedures vary in rural and urban areas or across places of service?

FAIR Health President Robin Gelburd remarked: “Disease prevalence and healthcare procedures, place of service and costs vary with geography. FAIR Health is ready to assist healthcare stakeholders with States by the Numbers analytics and visualizations on matters of interest to them.”
