Ohio Awards Workers’ Compensation Engagement to FAIR Health

September 27, 2022

As a result of a competitive bidding process, Ohio has awarded a workers’ compensation engagement to FAIR Health. Ohio has thus become the 11th state whose workers’ compensation program FAIR Health has supported with services to help evaluate and update its fee schedules.

Working with the Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation, FAIR Health will be helping the state with multiple fee schedules. We will be creating reports and presentations tied to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ issuance of proposed and final rules for professional fees and ambulatory surgery center, outpatient and inpatient fees.

FAIR Health has supported workers’ compensation programs in 10 other states: Colorado, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Carolina and Tennessee. We have assisted states with Medicare-based workers’ compensation fee schedules, and/or used our own healthcare claims data to inform state fee schedules, working closely with each state to address its needs and priorities. In some cases, FAIR Health data are used to develop reimbursement rates for services that are not valued by Medicare. Additional states license FAIR Health benchmark data to support internal fee schedule evaluation.

FAIR Health data also are used or officially approved by states for numerous other purposes, including serving as a basis for reimbursement under surprise billing legislation in various jurisdictions. For example, FAIR Health data serve as the independent, official data source for surprise billing laws in Connecticut, Georgia, New Mexico, New York and Texas. FAIR Health provides a broad range of other assistance to states, from supplying benchmarks that serve as standards for payment under various laws and regulations, such as programs established to support medical services for crime victims, to helping evaluate economic and clinical trends and supporting research with data and analytics.

FAIR Health President Robin Gelburd stated: “FAIR Health is pleased to have been awarded the contract to assist Ohio with its workers’ compensation fee schedule. Working with state agencies is an important part of our mission to bring transparency to healthcare costs. We look forward to sharing our deep experience with workers’ compensation programs with the Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation.”
