External Research

December 17, 2024

External researchers rely on FAIR Health data and publications for a broad array of studies featured in prominent journals and government reports. This year’s external research included studies from PLOS Computational Biology, American Journal of Managed Care, Drug Safety and the Federal Communications Commission, among others. Topics included COVID-19 treatment, pediatric mental health and food allergies.

External research came in two basic forms: studies making direct use of FAIR Health’s aggregated, de-identified data, and research citing FAIR Health’s own data studies. FAIR Health remains strenuously neutral as to the points of view or conclusions expressed in the various published studies listed below.

Direct Use of FAIR Health Data

Gilbert Gonzales, J. Wilder and N. Tran, “Disparities in Mental Health and the Social Determinants of Health Among Privately Insured Transgender Patients in the United States,” European Journal of Public Health 34, Issue Supplement_3 (November 2024): ckae144.064.
This study examined disparities in mental health and the social determinants of health among privately insured transgender and gender minority patients in the United States. The study used FAIR Health data to compare patients with a diagnosis for gender dysphoria or gender identity disorder to a random selection of cisgender patients.

Mandar Bodas et al., “Obstetrician-Gynecologists’ Telehealth Provision at the Beginning, During, and Latter Stages of the COVID-19 Pandemic,” Telemedicine and e-Health (October 14, 2024).
The authors described how obstetrician-gynecologists provided telehealth services for pregnancy care from January 2020 to December 2022. The authors used aggregated, de-identified data from FAIR Health to conduct the study.

Matthew C. Baker et al., “What Value Do Teaching Hospitals Provide Commercial Beneficiaries When in an ACO?,” American Journal of Managed Care 30, Spec. No. 10 (September 16, 2024): SP738-SP744.
The authors of this study examined commercial claims data to compare beneficiaries cared for by accountable care organizations (ACOs) with and without a major teaching hospital. The study used FAIR Health’s aggregated commercial claims data to calculate outcomes, such as annual spending, utilization and mortality rate for patients in ACOs.

Diego F. Wyszynski et al., “Use of Sotrovimab in Pregnancy: Experiences from the COVID-19 International Drug Pregnancy Registry,” Drug Safety 47 (May 9, 2024): 843-51.
The authors studied the safety and efficacy of a monoclonal antibody therapy (sotrovimab) for COVID-19 among pregnant women. The study cited FAIR Health’s de-identified claims data as used in a previously published real-world effectiveness study of sotrovimab.

Christopher F. Bell et al., “Real-World Effectiveness of Sotrovimab for the Early Treatment of COVID-19: Evidence from the US National COVID Cohort Collaborative (N3C),” Clinical Drug Investigation (February 20, 2024).
This study assessed the clinical effectiveness of sotrovimab versus no treatment in reducing the risk of progression to severe COVID-19 in a high-risk population with mild-to-moderate COVID-19. The authors cited a sotrovimab study that used FAIR Health data on patients with COVID-19.
