Expanding FAIR Health Data Repository Paves Way for New Custom Analytics
August 15, 2024
The continuing expansion of the FAIR Health repository—now surpassing 47 billion commercial claim records—has paved the way for new views into our data and new custom analytics. Examples of recent custom uses of the FAIR Health database include helping stakeholders identify healthcare access issues, understand shifts in utilization, inform reimbursement strategies and discern pricing trends. FH® Custom Analytics offer government entities, academic researchers and commercial clients the ability to answer countless questions impacting the healthcare system to meet a wide array of needs.
Identifying Healthcare Access Issues
Stakeholders can customize analyses of the de-identified FH NPIC® (National Private Insurance Claims) repository to understand specific healthcare markets, identify healthcare access issues and position themselves for success in those markets. For example, FAIR Health’s repository is being used to determine the prevalence of autism and the utilization of applied behavior analysis therapy to identify gaps in service.
Understanding Healthcare Utilization
As the healthcare system continues to evolve, FAIR Health data can be used to keep track by observing patterns of utilization. For example, stakeholders have requested FAIR Health studies of healthcare utilization rates by age, gender and geography to help understand shifts in places of service over time for many services, including shifting utilization by place of service of cardiac procedures.
Using Cost Data to Inform Rates and Discern Trends in Pricing
Customized cuts of FAIR Health data can enable an evaluation of the trends in charges or allowed amounts for specific procedures over time. For example, FAIR Health cost data have been used by stakeholders to help inform their reimbursement rates for oncology, including diagnostic ancillary services. Stakeholders have also examined practice management patterns and utilization trends by using our data to identify top procedure codes by specialty and understand pricing trends in specialties such as medical oncology, cardiology, urology, gastrointestinal medicine and orthopedics.
Other Custom Clinical Inquiries
The rich and expanding collection of commercial claim records housed by FAIR Health are well suited to support many clinical inquiries. Such inquiries include those that seek to test or verify patterns seen in clinical trials and experience. FAIR Health can also help stakeholders gain a holistic picture of specific patient populations by providing insights into such factors as patient volume, patient characteristics, number of services received, spending, underserved patient populations and patient outcomes. Even when requests are complex or a stakeholder is unsure how to focus its area of inquiry, FAIR Health staff are often able to advise and apply customized methods to locate relevant information or trends as required.
FAIR Health President Robin Gelburd stated: “Custom analytics are an important part of our mission to bring transparency to healthcare information. Our rich repository continues to anchor stakeholder understanding of different markets with respect to all corners of the healthcare system.”
