Enhanced Consumer Resources Available for Licensing and Private-Labeling

June 16, 2022

Recent enhancements to FAIR Health’s consumer resources aid organizations seeking to license or privately label a groundbreaking health literacy platform for members, patients and their families. Among the enhancements are a shoppable services tool, FH® Total Treatment Cost lookup tool and the FH® Consumer Classroom mobile app.

Advancing Cost Transparency
For many organizations, promoting healthcare cost transparency is increasingly important. A growing number of state and federal laws and regulations aim at making healthcare costs more transparent to consumers. At the same time, consumers are being asked to shoulder a greater share of costs and navigate a complex healthcare system. Payors, providers, state government agencies and others want to advance cost transparency, but creating transparency tools from scratch poses many challenges. As a result, many organizations have come to rely on licensing or private-labeling the award-winning tools available on fairhealthconsumer.org.

A pioneer in cost transparency, FAIR Health has been honored nationwide for FAIR Health Consumer, our easy-to-use consumer website available in English and Spanish online. The site has won praise from industry and government leaders alike, has been recognized in hundreds of media outlets across the country and has received numerous honors and awards.

FAIR Health Consumer empowers consumers to estimate medical and dental care costs by procedure and geographic location, using the FH® Medical Cost Estimator and the FH® Dental Cost Estimator. The site also puts the costs in context with a rich educational curriculum. Among other features, the site provides:

  • In- and out-of-network medical care cost estimates;
  • Out-of-network and allowed cost estimates for dental care;
  • A geo-compare feature that shows medical and dental cost estimates in adjacent areas;
  • FH® Insurance Basics, a series of original articles and videos explaining how health coverage works in easy-to-understand language; and
  • Resource links, a glossary and a healthcare quality toolkit.

Recent Enhancements
Shoppable services tool. New features on FAIR Health Consumer include a tool for estimating the cost of nonurgent healthcare services known as shoppable services. The tool allows consumers to browse through more than 300 shoppable services or search for a specific service, then get an estimate of the average cost of that service in the consumer’s geographic area or surrounding areas. Both in-network and out-of-network costs are given, together with the costs for other related services that the consumer may not know to ask about—such as anesthesia costs for a colonoscopy.

FH Medical Cost Estimator. When using the FH Medical Cost Estimator to access medical cost estimates, recently introduced features allow consumers to look up urgent care costs, telehealth costs and hospital inpatient facility costs.

FH Total Treatment Cost. Also available when using the FH Medical Cost Estimator is FH Total Treatment Cost, which shows the overall, geographically specific cost involved in caring for acute conditions like vaginal delivery, chronic conditions like type 1 or 2 diabetes and event-based procedures like knee replacement. Both in-network and out-of-network costs are presented, with both total and itemized costs displayed.

FH Consumer Classroom. Available on the Apple App Store and Google Play, this mobile app provides easy access—in a concise, user-friendly format—to the educational materials also available on FAIR Health Consumer. FH Consumer Classroom enables users to learn about health insurance and healthcare quality through articles, videos and a glossary, and access key resources and interactive puzzles to support learning. The app also links to the FH Medical and Dental Cost Estimators.

Customizing FAIR Health Consumer
Organizations can offer the data and content on FAIR Health Consumer through a private-label version of the site with their own branding, “look and feel” and messaging. Options include:

  • Making the full consumer site available to members or patients, customized with the organization’s branding;
  • Licensing our cost lookup tools to provide customer service teams or other staff with immediate access to cost estimates for thousands of medical and/or dental procedures;
  • Licensing our educational curriculum, FH Insurance Basics, branded for the organization, including any of our specific articles and videos, as well as our resource links and glossary; and
  • Incorporating our medical and dental cost data in the organization’s member tools via an application programming interface (API).

FAIR Health automatically refreshes the cost information in private-label websites at least twice annually, and regularly adds to the site’s educational content and features.
