As the Pandemic Continues, FAIR Health’s Data Remain Vital

December 16, 2021

As the COVID-19 pandemic continued in 2021, FAIR Health’s data and role in supporting research have never been more vital. In the course of that year, FAIR Health extended its series of COVID-19 data studies begun the year before, continued and redesigned its Monthly Telehealth Regional Tracker, and launched the COVID-19 Cost Tracker, which tracks state-by-state costs of treatment and hospitalization for COVID-19. Related to the COVID-19 Cost Tracker, we released a brief, COVID-19 Treatment and Hospitalization Costs: A Descriptive Analysis of the FAIR Health COVID-19 Cost Tracker . FAIR Health issued studies and infographics on other topics as well, such as air ambulance services, maternal health, consumer support and the latest annual edition of our FH® Healthcare Indicators and FH® Medical Price Index. For more details, see the summary of this year’s FAIR Health Research in this issue.

The foundation for FAIR Health’s studies and infographics is our FAIR Health National Private Insurance Claims (FH NPIC®) database of private healthcare claims, the nation’s largest such repository; and the traditional Medicare data we receive for the entire country from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services as a certified national Qualified Entity. At present, FAIR Health’s private claims database contains more than 35 billion claim records for medical and dental services from 2002 to the present and is growing by more than 2 billion new claim records per year.

As part of our continuing mission to advance health systems research, FAIR Health makes data available to support other researchers. In addition, many researchers cite our independent studies and infographics to enrich their own publications. Media outlets also cite and regularly report on FAIR Health studies. For more details, see the summary of this year’s External Research in this issue.
